Key facts Name: Ṭāriq ibn Ziyād (طارق بن زياد) Origin: Berber, probably from North Africa Period: Early 8th century Commander: Served under Musa ibn Nusayr, governor of Ifriqiya Famous campaign: Crossing from North Africa into the Iberian Peninsula in 711 CE Battle: His forces defeated the Visigothic king Roderic at the Battle of Guadalete, according to traditional accounts. Gibraltar: The name Gibraltar derives from the Arabic Jabal Ṭāriq — “Mountain of Tariq.” The famous crossing In 711 CE, Tariq crossed the strait with an army traditionally reported as numbering around 7,000 soldiers, later reinforced by additional troops. He established a foothold near the mountain now known as Gibraltar. Traditional historical narratives describe Tariq giving a dramatic speech to his troops after the crossing, sometimes summarized by the famous phrase “the sea is behind you and the enemy is before you.” However, historians debate whether the famous speech—and particularly the story that he ordered the ships burned—is historically authentic. These details appear in later sources and should not be treated as certain contemporary evidence. His campaign Tariq's forces moved rapidly through Visigothic territory, capturing important cities. The victory over Roderic opened much of the Iberian Peninsula to further Muslim expansion. Later, Musa ibn Nusayr arrived with another army. Tariq and Musa subsequently continued the conquest, although their relationship and the exact sequence of events are described differently in historical sources. By the early 720s, most of the Iberian Peninsula had come under Muslim rule, beginning a period of Islamic rule in parts of Iberia that lasted for centuries. Why Tariq ibn Ziyad is remembered Tariq is particularly remembered for: Courage → Leadership → Military strategy → The crossing into Iberia → Gibraltar His story became one of the best-known episodes in Islamic and North African history. - [TARIQ BIN ZIAD PART2](https://truestorycomics.com/product/super-knight/): Tariq ibn Ziyad — طارق بن زياد Tariq ibn Ziyad was a Berber Muslim military commander who played a major role in the Muslim conquest of the Iberian Peninsula in the early 8th century. He was a very devoted Muslim and very generous too. He was ever willing to help the poor and the needy and allocated some portion of his wealth for them. People had high respect for him. Although a devoted and generous Muslim, Al Qamah neglected his mother. He listened more to his wife than his mother. He did not take care and never visited his old mother who was poor and lived in a very deplorable home. One day Al Qamah fell sick. His sickness became more critical day by day. He was on his death bed and friends who came visiting led him to recite the Shahadah (there is no god but Allah and Prophet Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah). But he just could not recite the Shahadah. His tongue was locked. The Prophet was informed of his condition. The Prophet sent for Al Qamah’s mother. It was obvious that Al Qamah’s mother was angry with him. That was the reason Al Qamah could not recite the Shahadah. But the mother did not want to forgive Al Qamah, not until the Prophet threatened to burn Al Qamah with woods. Soon after she forgave his son, Al Qamah was able to recite the Shahadah and then died. - [Thufeil Amr Ad Dausi](https://truestorycomics.com/product/thufeil/): Delight Pizza brings the joy of freshly baked pizzas straight to your doorstep.
